Blacklegged Ticks & Tick-Borne Disease in Litchfield County

The blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis), commonly called the deer tick, is the primary tick species in Connecticut and the main carrier of Lyme disease in the region. Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which an infected tick typically transmits after being attached for 36 to 48 hours or longer. Symptoms can appear anywhere from 3 to 30 days after a bite, and if left untreated, the disease can progress to joint, neurological, and cardiac complications.

Nymph-stage ticks are particularly hard to detect because they’re roughly the size of a poppy seed, yet they account for the majority of Lyme disease transmissions during peak summer months. June and July carry the highest risk for Litchfield County residents.
